Physiotherapy for Hip Pain & Rehabilitation

The hip joint is one of the most important joints in our body allowing us to run, walk and jump. The hip carries most of the body’s weight and the force of the strong leg muscles whilst also remaining one of the most flexible joints in the body.

Being the largest joint, hip pain is a very common complaint in both adults and children, and can cause great disruption to your day-to-day life or sporting ambitions. Pain may come directly from the hip joint itself or the muscles that support the hip. If you have hip pain that is persisting it is important to seek help from a Physiotherapist.

Common Hip Injuries We Can Help With

Hip Tendinopathy/Tendonitis – Hip tendinopathies are the ‘overloading’ of tendons around the hip, which is often the result of poor biomechanics of the hip during movement repeated over time. Tendinopathies generally present as pain when first starting activity, which eases off as the hip warms up, followed by pain a few hours after activity once the area has cooled back down. There are various stages of tendinopathies, each with varying treatment strategies used to rehabilitate.

To treat effectively, you need to be assessed by a Physiotherapist to ascertain which stage of tendon injury you are in and move forward to commence an individualized rehab plan.

Hip Bursitis – Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa of the hip, often this is triggered by a repeated irritating action. Bursitis is often associated with the overuse or weakness of the muscles around the hip, leading to increased pressure over the bursa. Pain from bursitis is often sharp in nature and more severe when you use the joint, although over time it may ache when not in use or at night.

If you have a diagnosis of Hip Bursitis your Physiotherapist will be able to provide treatments to minimize your painful symptoms, assist with activity modifications to reduce the irritation and develop a specific individualized exercise program to build up strength in the weakened muscles.

Hip Impingement – Hip impingement occurs when there is abnormal contact between the thighbone and the socket of the hip joint. It presents as a sharp, pinching pain in the hip, often during sitting, walking, squatting or activities involving lots of hip flexion. There will also typically be a restriction in hip range of motion particularly into flexion and internal rotation.

Your Physiotherapist will assist with symptom relief, as well as provide education on appropriate exercises to restore range of motion, improve strength around the hip and return to correct movement patterns. If left untreated, the impingement can lead to cartilage damage, labral tears or osteoarthritis.

Arthritis – Arthritis is the degeneration of a joint which can lead to restricted movement, pain and weakness of a joint. Strengthening exercises help to increase flexibility and decrease joint pain when suffering from arthritis.
