Physiotherapy for Shoulder Pain & Rehabilitation

At Trained Physio & Fitness we are experienced in shoulder pain management and treatment in Perth.

The shoulder is extremely flexible, which can also render it prone to injury due to lack of stability.  It is crucial for the shoulder to have a balance of strength and mobility throughout the joint to ensure it remains pain and injury free.

The shoulder is made up of three joints:

  1. Glenohumeral Joint
  2. Scapulothoracic Joint
  3. Acromioclavicular Joint

Problems that develop with these joints will lead to pain, decrease in strength and limited mobility.  Take action from Perth’s leading East Perth Physiotherapists.

Common Shoulder Injuries We Can Help With

Rotator Cuff Injuries – Rotator Cuff injuries can be the result of a sudden high impact injury to the shoulder or due to progressive degeneration or “wear and tear” of the tendon. Recurring overhead activity and heavy lifting can develop bone spurs. Bone spurs develop where bones meet each other, and are caused from joint damage. Your Trained Physio Perth Physiotherapist will educate you on the correct course of action, can manage rotator cuff injuries through conservative treatment.

Shoulder Bursitis – Bursitis of the shoulder can be triggered by a repeated action or overuse of the shoulder joint and muscles. Bursitis is often associated with inflammation of the rotator cuff tendons.

Shoulder Impingement – Shoulder impingement occurs when the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder become compressed by bones of the shoulder blade and upper arm, particularly when moving into overhead positions. It presents as a sharp, pinching pain, often through the middle arc of moving the arm out to the side and then above the head. If left, impingement can lead to bursitis and tendinopathies.

Shoulder Tendinopathy/Tendonitis – Shoulder tendinopathies are often the result of poor biomechanics of the shoulder during movement, repeated over time. This causes the tendons to be loaded sub-optimally, resulting in pain and inflammation. Tendinopathies often present as pain when first starting activity, then easing off as the shoulder warms up, followed by pain a few hours after activity once the area has cooled back down. There are various stages of tendinopathies, each with varying treatment strategies used to rehabilitate.

To treat effectively, you need to be assessed by a Physiotherapist to ascertain which stage of tendon injury you are in and move forward to commence your rehab plan.

After assessing you, our physiotherapists will discuss the most appropriate treatment. A treatment plan may include injury prevention strategies, manual therapy and exercise programs.
