What is hip replacement rehabilitation?
Hip replacement rehabilitation is required after a hip replacement surgery, and helps to ensure you maximise your chances of a full recovery by regaining strength, mobility and full range of movement.
Hip replacement rehabilitation involves a well-structured exercise program to ensure that your hip joint regains mobility and strength to get you back on your feet quickly and safely without any ongoing issues.
As part of your treatment plan we offer a range of physio services, such as:
- An exercise program
- Access to our 24/7 gymnasium
- Massage or Manual Therapy
- Dry Needling
- Clinical Pilates
Our goal is to create long-term relationships with our clients to ensure long lasting results to maximise your recovery and quality of life.Book Your Appointment
What conditions can lead to a hip replacement?
There are many conditions that may lead to hip replacement surgery, some of the most common being:
- Hip Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Post-traumatic Arthritis
- Avascular Necrosis
- Childhood Hip Disease
Why is physiotherapy recommended after a hip replacement?
Having surgery is only half the battle when it comes to your hip replacement. Physiotherapy is the additional important step in a full and successful recovery from your operation.
Physiotherapy is highly recommended after your surgery because it helps you restore the joint’s range of motion and strengthens the muscles around the hip, leading to long-term functionality of your new hip joint.
Your physiotherapy program will usually begin the day following your surgery, where you will be taught some basic steps to aide with your post-surgery recovery – such as learning to get in and out of bed safely, walking up and down steps, getting into and out of the car, just to name a few.Book Your Appointment
When should I start hip rehab after a hip replacement?
Generally it’s recommended that patients begin their rehab straight after a successful hip replacement surgery. In most cases, this will be the following day after your surgery.
Your orthopaedic surgeon will advise you of when it’s safe and appropriate to begin your recovery program. Our job as physiotherapists is to work with your surgeon to establish and implement a suitable and appropriate recovery program for your individual needs to assist in a successful rehabilitation that will build your new hip’s your strength and mobility to the desired level.
How long does hip replacement rehabilitation take?
As with any type of recovery, hip replacement rehabilitation can vary significantly, depending on a number of factors. These include:
- Age of patient
- Activity level of patient
- Physical condition of patient
- Desired outcome of patient.
Most patients we see at Trained Physio and Fitness begin to feel significantly better within the first couple of weeks where they feel a reduction in both pain and discomfort, and start to regain strength, mobility and flexibility in the hips.
